USA Freedom Kids

Apparently they are a viral sensation, but today is the first day I’m hearing about them. Yes, I mean the USA Freedom Kids! The number they performed at a Trump rally in Pensacola, FL reminds me a bit of Olive’s act in the film Little Miss Sunshine.  The back beat sounds like a techno / diluted version of Blondie’s “Heart of Glass.” Their song entitled “Freedom’s Call” is a re-write of the popular World War I and II tune “Over There.”

The founder / manager of the group is Jeff Popick, father of Alexis, the youngest girl in the group. He is planning to sue the Trump campaign for violating their business agreement. They were promised two performances in Pensacola, but the first performance did not transpire.  When Popick asked for the $2,500 promised for their  one and only performance, a counter offer was proposed to give them a table for pre-selling CDs. No table was set up for them, and they still have not been paid for the performance (January 2016). Boo, Trump!

Trump’s campaign manager also invited the Freedom Kids to perform at a rally in Des Moines which would have brought them huge publicity, but when they arrived, they were told there was a change of plan. They made the trip for nothing and were not compensated for any hotel or travel expenses.

Washington Post article by Philip Bump notes:

. . . Popick’s story mirrors analysis of Trump’s record in working with small business owners, some of whom allege that the Republican nominee failed to live up to financial and other commitments he’d made to them.

So much for Trump’s proclamation to regular folks: “I am your voice.” I beg to differ.

I think I know who has the true heart of glass.

I’ll Be Watching You

These eyes greet you as you exit
There is another pair at the top
of the stairs

These eyes

The right one has a larger iris
almost squinting, drooping
tired of too much
watching

The left one is
more focused,
alert and cold

Tired Big Brother
Tired Big Sister
tired of spies

Free the Zombies

I had passport photos taken today. My passport expires in October, and Lorin and I might be going out of the country this year. You never know. I made sure my hair was washed, and my face was made-even adding eyeliner underneath the lid, which I usually forego. It would be a good passport photo. I was wrong.

out of focus passport photo

(I realize it’s somewhat out of focus – took with my iphone. Believe me, it’s better this way.)

To me this screams, “Just Sentenced to Gulag” or “10 Years Hard Labor.”

Anyway, after hiding the photos in the zippered portion of my wallet and walking back to the office, I realized how much healthier and happier I looked in my photo from 2005. It helped that I had some color in my cheeks, and I think I had recently returned from vacation. And I was smiling. That always helps.

We often read about preserves and parks to save various species who have been enslaved by the circus or been lab animals all their lives. These animals deserve their freedom and a modicum of happiness. We all do!

We also need to recognize the Caged Zombie, aka office worker, who needs sunlight, fresh air, and perhaps, even a pool to splash in. Would it be so hard to provide this?

Granted, we get vacation time, but sometimes we don’t have adequate funds to travel, or things are too busy at the office for us to leave. What would be the harm in providing us– free of charge–a few weeks of freedom, out of our usual surroundings, away from the grueling commute that gradually transforms us from humans into zombies. Would it be too much to ask?

Prerequisites for a zombie vacation:

1.   freedom from computers

2.   freedom from answering phones

3.   freedom from flourescent lights

4.  freedom from multi-tasking

5.  freedom from fire drills

6.  open spaces

7.  natural sunlight

8.  pools to splash in

9.  freedom from commuting

What would your ideal zombie vacation be?

Frida Kahlo in the Window

Frida Kahlo in the window
eyes skyward
such power in a single gaze
hold tight, Frida
your eyes climbed the trees
if your body could not

I gather strength from those eyes.

Her last diary entry read: “I hope the end is joyful – and I hope never to return – Frida..”

When asked what she wanted done with her body, she said, “Burn it…I don’t want to be buried. I have spent too much time lying down… Just burn it!” (www.fridakahlo.com)

Free Falling

In the wheelchair
rocking
pushing forward from the hips
seeking that thing
that fell to the ground
in the day room
after breakfast
Was it a last bit of muffin
or a hidden gem
no one else could see
but she knows is there
She reaches, straining
nobody notices
they never do
She leans forward, harder
wishing it with all her might
that feeling of flight
forward motion
ever forward
she is going somewhere
despite her shrunken legs
which fail her
She will fly
and not shield her eyes
why would she
shield her eyes?

It was worth the cut
and the swollen red eye
They will think she
was in a fight–
how exciting!
They will take her to the hospital,
patch her up
She forgets what happened
doesn’t know why
but she will not lose
the will to fly
